Introduction
How do bigger corporations help their smaller counterparts? How do you use data for social impact? This and other questions are what will be answered in the following article linked here.
Summary of Article
the article talks about the data science Gap in private companies versus non-profit and public sectors due to a lack of resources in these areas that they haven’t been able to keep up with the privatized companies. The Rockefeller Foundation and the MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth announced a 50 million dollar investment over 5 years to enhance data science capabilities in those types of organizations that are struggling to help combat pressing social challenges. Then the article gets into the Data Kind partnership which pledges 20 million to support the data kind nonprofit that is centered around data science. The article then gets into some case studies of this working out for example in Switzerland where Refugee placements were optimized in California to help combat the drought and several other different case studies where this type of investment worked out and drove both social and economic growth. The article ends by emphasizing this is a collaborative effort between the private and public sectors big and small and between profit and nonprofit organizations. With this collaboration the entire economy and society as a whole will thrive and be much more productive.
My Take
overall I like this article it outlined the effects that have already happened in the spaces as well as ones that are to come and it also outlines their impact. Not only that but it supports this investment with previous case studies that have already shown that there’s a tried and tested way to help both society and the economy. I enjoy the positive light that this paints data science as sometimes it just took connotative negatively in the sense it might take jobs or the cyber security attacks Etc so it’s good to see that data science is being used for good in several places like this article mentions.
Conclusion
all of this article was a good one I enjoyed the different perspectives on data science not just a technical or a societal perspective but more of an impact perspective. I highly recommend you read it when you have some time in the article is linked here.
