Introduction
Today, more than ever, the need for data security is apparent. Due to this, businesses need to ensure that their data is secured and make data security a core part of their business. Not only is this imperative for data usage but also there can be severe legal repercussions if data security is not taken seriously. But how do you secure your data in today’s day and age? Well, that is what Ovais Naseem(a marketing strategist at Astera) talks about on the blog Data Science Central(link to article found here).
Summary of Article
The article first talks about understanding data security and the importance of data security – especially in today’s day and age. Next, the article gets into why it is important to have a data security policy at your business. It in essence details the facts that having a data security policy provides a clear framework for data security, and it is sometimes a requirement to comply with regulatory standards. Next, the article gets into the best practices of data security. They use strong algorithms(such as AES-256), key management(keeping the encryption keys secure and rotating them frequently), end-to-end encryption(encrypt your data!), multilayered security(use encryption and other layers of security along with it such as firewalls or two-factor authentication), and regular auditing(perform audits regularly to ensure the effectiveness of your methods and update them as needed). The article mentions two more points to secure your data – access control(make sure you control who has access to what and ensure that people only have access to what they need) and secure file-sharing methods(make sure you share files securely). The article then ends with summarizing all of this again and reemphasizing why data security is so important today.
My Take
Overall, this article was really good. It did a good job of blending theory with application. That is, it did a good job of teaching and explaining what data security is and why it is important yet it still gave some concrete ways to implement it into your business case. Doing this was extremely useful and interesting because I not only learned about what data security was and its importance in this field and in general but I also found out ways to implement it into a business. Another thing that was good in this article is that the author gave almost a checklist of the basic parts of data security so a business knows where to start. In other words, the article’s blend of applicability and theoretical learning was spot on and made the article interesting and informative. I also really like the way the article was written. It was written in a very easy-to-understand way. This made the article a straightforward read, boosting its enjoyability while reading. One thing that I would have liked to see is the inclusion of images to break up the sections so that way the reader gets a mental break when reading the article. But other than that, the article was fantastic!
Conclusion
All in all, the article was a good one. It had a good blend of theoretical information and information that applies to the real world. It was also written well. Overall, I highly recommend you check it out when you get the chance(the article can be found here).
