Introduction
Data science was posed to the job of the future earlier in the century. But now it is time to present the opposite question – is data science dying? It might be shocking that we are talking about a so-called golden job, just 10 years ago, already dying. But that’s exactly what KTV explains in his article on the topic (the article can be found here). He explores whether data science is dying and, if not, what is happening to it.
Summary of Article
So overall is data science dying? Just like many complicated questions, the answer is not easy. But overall the answer is yes and no. Through a series of graphs and regular explanations, KTV breaks down why this is the case. The general job of a data scientist is on the decline but the overall concepts and skills possessed by data scientists are still in high demand. Mainly people are becoming more specialized in their fields and this is making their jobs not be called data scientists but rather something else, making it look like the job of a data scientist is on the decline.
For example, a person might learn both data science and business and go on to be a financial analyst. This job still requires the same amount of human capital as a data scientist but they are not called “data scientists” because they have specialized. People don’t only specialize in industry knowledge people also combine data science with Artificial intelligence and machine learning to further increase their human capital and intern value to companies.
My Take
I liked this article, it was well-written, the graphs were helpful and easy to read, and the article was easy to follow. The article reads like a story which makes sense because the author is interested in fiction. The author takes you through his findings on the topic as if you were investigating it on your own by introducing one layer at a time such as the overlay of artificial intelligence and machine learning on the graphs to give us a point to compare the popularity of data science against.
Conclusion
All in all, this article was a good one and I recommend you read it. It incorporated good storytelling, well-thought-out visuals, and interesting insights to make for an exciting read. I recommend you check it out (the article can be found here).
